The month of February 2023 sees a 10% increase in attendance on the ski slopes and, with it, an increase in the number of accidents. In Alpe d’Huez, in Isère, rescuers and hospitals are overwhelmed.

They have been in high demand since the beginning of the holidays: in the ski resort of Alpe d’Huez (Isere)the rescuers are increasing their interventions on the slopes. With, in February 2023, an attendance of +10% compared to last year, the accidents are more numerous but most often not serious. In 2023, relief efforts increased by 15% in Alpe d’Huez.

Some patients have to go home

Most victims are transported to the station’s medical office. Dr Bridget Ashkart has served there for 20 years. For her, this month of February is one of the busiest. Four doctors and an intern came as reinforcements. Even the hospitals in the valley are overwhelmed. Patients who need to be operated on”sometimes leave directly by ambulance from here or from the accommodation they have in Alpe d’Huez to be operated on and taken care of at home, or in their country for foreigners”, explains Brigitte Ashkart.
