(New Orleans) PJ Williams intercepted a pass from Tom Brady and brought it back 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left in the final quarter on Sunday, helping the New Orleans Saints to win 36 -27 at the expense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The win could be costly for the Saints, however, as quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a left knee injury.
Winston left early in the second quarter after being tackled from behind by Devin White, who was also punished for pulling the epaulettes, on the streak.
“I think it’s notable as an injury,” said Saints coach Sean Payton. He was given crutches. When a guy gets up but then has to sit down, it worries a bit. ”
Trevor Siemian took over (16 for 29, for 159 yards and one touchdown pass), guiding his team to two touchdowns and three field goals.
“He has experience,” said Payton, quoted by the Saints website. He’s been a starter in this league before. I am proud of Trevor. ”
Brady had four touchdown passes, but he committed two interceptions and lost the ball once. The Saints took 16 points.
“It was embarrassing,” said Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians, quoted by the team’s website. We weren’t ready. Punishments (11) and turnovers are never a good recipe for winning. ”
Tampa Bay erased a 16-point delay in the second half.
With 5:44 to go in the final quarter, the Bucs took the lead 27-26 thanks to a 50-yard connection with Cyril Grayson, once a member of the LSU track team.
A placement, however, gave the lead to the Saints, then the defense resisted.
Brady dropped the ball after hesitating to pass, following pressure from Cameron Jordan. The ball was picked up at midfield by David Onyemata, returning to play after a six-game suspension.
“We didn’t play like we can,” said Brady, quoted by the Bucs website. Myself, I have to do better. We will try to play better next time. ”
Buccaneers wide end Rob Gronkowski only played briefly, having to step aside due to back pain.
He had just missed four games with a rib injury.
