(Ottawa) The families of two First Nations women whose remains are believed to be in a Winnipeg landfill say they are disappointed by a meeting with a Liberal minister in Ottawa.
The remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran are suspected to be in the Prairie Green landfill, a private facility north of Winnipeg, and the families have called on provincial and federal leaders to fund the search.
Their families expected Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Gary Anandasangaree to tell them the federal government would fund the research when they met Monday.
His daughter, Cambria Harris, instead called the meeting a traumatic experience and says the federal government has yet to promise to help.
Jeremy Skibicki was charged with first degree murder in the death of Mmy Harris and Myran and two others: Rebecca Contois, whose partial remains were found in another landfill last year, and an unidentified woman whom Indigenous leaders call Mashkode Bizhiki’ikwe, or Buffalo Woman.
Families, their supporters and organizations including Amnesty International Canada are marking the International Day of Action for Dump Searches on Monday, aiming to pressure governments to do more.
