20 years of pleasure and discovery at “La Piscine” in Roubaix
The Swimming Pool – Museum of Art and Industry André Diligent, which opened its doors on October 21, 2001, is located on the site of the former Art Deco swimming pool which, on the initiative of Mayor Jean-Baptiste Lebas, was built between 1927 and 1932 according to plans by the Lille architect Albert Baert (1863-1951). Now listed as a 20th century heritage, this swimming pool offered at the time a sporting and hygienic service of high quality, endowed with an innovative social functioning which presented the image of a municipal team coming from the working world and capable of promote exceptional and prestigious projects.
Since its opening in October 2001, La Piscine has enjoyed remarkable media and public success. The Roubaix museum heritage has been enriched by deposits, donations and purchases made by the City or thanks to the Friends of the Museum and the Cercle des Entreprises Mécènes de La Piscine. To preserve and present these substantial sets of several thousand references, an expansion was quickly required. Winner of the competition launched in 2011, it is again Jean-Paul Philippon who is responsible for writing this new architectural page in the history of the museum.
After 18 months of work and six months of closure, necessary for the installation of the new presentations, La Piscine reopens its doors in October 2018. With more than 2000 m2 additional, the new spaces dedicated to the history of Roubaix, to sculpture , at the Roubaix Group, temporary exhibitions and young audiences promise a historical enrichment of the visitors’ journey and the services offered by the museum.
