When we look at and compare the forces present in the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the outcome unfortunately cannot be in doubt. The population of Israel is equivalent to that of Quebec. But, with the unconditional support of the United States, in all its forms, it nevertheless remains one of the military powers of the world. The UN Security Council has just voted on an immediate ceasefire. The United States flatly refuses to support this request. Canada refrains from commenting: “embarrassing” position of the country’s servility towards its powerful neighbor.
Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will no doubt soon shout: “Victory!” » But will this really be one in the long term? The guns having fallen silent, the bombs having ceased to sow destruction, terror and death in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, will possibly revive just national aspirations in the hearts of Palestinian youth. But, at the same time, there will have been a growing conviction that justice has not been done following the violent deaths of thousands of children, women, old people and poor people hunted down by the Israeli army, in clear violation of international laws protecting civilians and the most vulnerable in society. Almost inevitably, from the ashes of Hamas the poison of hatred and revenge will quickly sprout and grow again in a certain Palestinian youth. They will be difficult to dissociate from another cry, this one very true, of thousands of children and women victims of unspeakable warlike violence that resembles a brutal and shameful collective punishment.
These mute, destroyed voices will nevertheless cry out for justice in the face of the entire world. A part of humanity, and an appreciable portion, if not a majority, of democratic citizens of the State of Israel will perhaps realize it, but too late: “Netanyahu and his gang won the war, but lost the peace at our expense and for a long time. »
