New films by Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Catherine Breillat or even Hirokazu Kore-Eda will be part of the films in competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, announced Thursday, April 13, the general delegate Thierry Frémaux unveiling a selection mixing veterans of the 7th art and newcomers.
A total of 19 films have been selected, which could be joined by a twentieth, Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese, with his favorite actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert de Niro. This film is for the moment planned out of competition but it could compete for the Palme d’Or. “The request has been made” to producers Paramount and Apple TV, “the main thing being that we have an answer before the festival begins”underlined Thierry Frémaux.
Of the 19 films in the running for the Palme d’Or, six are signed by female directors, including the Italian Alice Rohrwacher and a newcomer, the Senegalese Ramata-Toulaye Sy, who is presenting her first film. “Six female directors in competition is a number never reached”, confirmed Thierry Frémaux to journalists after the press conference. The Festival will also open with another film by a director, Jeanne du Barry of the French Maïwenn, which signs the great return of Johnny Depp.
