The presidential election in Taiwan, Saturday January 13, was won by William Lai. It signifies the victory of the independence camp, even though Beijing considers the territory as one of its provinces.
Favorite of the ballot, he became the president of Taiwan. William Lai, the vice-president of the Democratic Progressive Party came first in the presidential election, with 40.2% of the votes. Along the same lines as the outgoing president, he considers the island independent of China, and is seen by Beijing as a serious danger. “Taiwan told the world that between democracy and authoritarianism, we chose to turn to the side of democracy”said William Lai after claiming victory.
Tensions between Taipei and Beijing are unlikely to come down again
Facing him, Hou Yu-ih, opposition candidate who advocates rapprochement with Beijing, admitted his defeat in front of his supporters. The election of Willam Lai, China’s bete noire, should not bring down tensions between Taipei and Beijing. They increased in the run-up to the elections, with Xi Jinping taking a dim view of Taiwan and the United States since 2016.
