Supermarkets could soon run out of rice, due to global warming that has hit major producing countries in recent months.

Rice is likely to run out of supermarket shelves in the coming months. The rice mill union warns of possible supply disruptions. Price increases are also to be expected. The first difficulties could arise with the arrival of the new rice crops in early 2023. The main producers, namely India and Pakistan, have been affected by high heat and floods.

According to Thierry Lievin, president of the French rice milling union, 250,000 tonnes of rice would be lost. “We are not talking about shortages, we are talking about supply difficulties and price increases. Basmati rice corresponds to 45% of the rice consumed in supermarkets and supermarkets”, he says. And it is not European production that will be able to compensate. Water has run out, and yields are affected.
