The food voucher should help low-income families cope with soaring prices. Its installation is complicated. The check, paid in one go, could be reduced to a classic device.

The food check was announced by Emmanuel Macron, following the Citizen’s Climate Convention. The initial idea is to help the poorest households to eat better, while supporting French farmers. Targeting a list of products is however difficult to implement. The government has therefore considered expanding the basket. The idea was refused by 50 deputies in a gallery. “This food check will allow the French, especially the most modest, to have priority access to quality products that will support French agriculture”believes Jean-Noël Barrot, MoDem deputy for Yvelines.

Discussions are still ongoing, but the amount of the check should vary between 50 and 150 euros. It would be paid in one go, by bank transfer or in the form of a food stamp. With rising inflation, some specialists want the list of products to be expanded. “You have money problems, a big problem with purchasing power, we will give you money, but only to spend on more expensive products. No. Unfortunately, there are French people who need help. ‘simply buy pasta or flour. (…) They seek to eat, not to eat better”notes Yves Puget, editorial director of LSA magazine.
