Lowering the unemployment rate for seniors is important since the government wants to raise the legal retirement age. The Minister of Labour, Olivier Dussopt, has hinted that the duration of compensation for unemployed workers over 55 could be reduced.

Bringing seniors back into companies, while their employment rate is very low: here is one of the objectives of the pension reform. Among the tracks of the government to achieve this, is the reduction of the duration of unemployment compensation, which is 36 months for those over 55 years old. It could drop to 30 or 24 months, like the general scheme.

The unions believe that the government’s fight is not the right one, while the employment rate for older people was 56% in 2021. “Reducing the rights of the most precarious, of the unemployed, does not make an employment policy and it does not solve the problem of employment for seniors”denounces Catherine Perret, CGT confederal secretary. Employers are not closing the door to this idea, but in return, companies should be helped to keep their employees with often higher incomes, by reducing “the employer’s contributions to unemployment insurance so that this employee costs less to the company”offers Jean-Eudes du Mesnil, Secretary General of the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CPME). The government has another track: encourage seniors to combine the salary of a new job and part of the unemployment benefit.
