Elements of the Parthenon have been in the possession of the British Museum since the beginning of the 19th century. However, they were stolen from Greece by an English lord. Unesco therefore recommends that the United Kingdom return the hidden part of the frieze.

The whole world knows the Parthenon, located in Athens (Greece). But the monument was looted in the 19th century by an English lord, who had 100 of the 160 meters of the precious marble frieze torn down. Georgia Tsifti, historian and guide to the Acropolis explains that “the friezes were on the upper part of the temple“Despite the seven tons that each block of marble weighs, the English carried them away. More than a robbery, Greece feels amputated from its history.”It’s not that it belongs to Greece, it belongs to the Acropolis (…) What are you when you accept something from a thief? A fence“, continues the historian.

However, the British Museum in London has been exhibiting the frieze since 1816. Museum officials refused to respond to the France Télévisions teams. The majority of the English are for rendering its historical friezes. In the meantime, the Greek Museum displays a white plaster copy of the missing frieze.
