Eight months after the death of Elizabeth II, King Charles will be officially crowned sovereign of the United Kingdom this Saturday, May 6. The king’s ecological sensitivity is no longer a mystery: will the ceremony live up to its commitment? Answer in the column “1 planet, solutions” produced by NOWU in partnership with France Info.

A wind of modernity blows on the ceremony of May 6, several details attesting to Charles III’s penchant for environmental issues.

Unlike Elizabeth II, who had chosen a chicken, the official coronation dish of Charles III will be a vegetarian quiche, Buckingham Palace announced in mid-April. Cooked from spinach, beans and cheddar, this meatless “coronation quiche” is a promising first signal.

In the same vein, among the measures planned for the big day: the oil used for the anointing of the king during the ceremony will be a vegan oil and the invitations have been printed on recycled paper.

Charles III will also be the first king to recycle the ceremonial clothes of his predecessors rather than having new ones made. The future Queen Camilla will also be the first queen consort to have her crown modified rather than create a new one.

All Britons are called upon to reduce their ecological impact during this celebratory weekend. For example, the county of Gloucestershire has released an online guide that offers advice on how to celebrate the coronation in a sustainable way, by making decorations from recycled cardboard or cooking dishes with local and seasonal products.

250,000 foreign visitors expected

Although commendable, the above-mentioned measures will not be enough to nullify the environmental impact of transporting guests and tourists associated with the coronation.

About 2,300 people (compared to 8,000 for the coronation of Elizabeth II) were invited to the ceremony, including around a hundred heads of state, the vast majority of whom will travel there by private jet.

To this must be added the 250,000 additional foreign visitors expected for the occasion, some of whom will travel by plane. Flight search engine Kayak has reported that European travelers’ internet searches for flights to London over Coronation weekend are 65% higher than for the same weekend in 2022. All these airplane flights polluteand will increase the carbon footprint of the coronation.
