PFAS, perfluorocarbons, are used in the manufacture of baking paper, paint, clothing and certain non-slip pans. Over time, they accumulate in the ground and are sometimes released into rivers, which they contaminate over the long term. “The problem with these molecules is that we know how to make them, but we don’t know how to degrade them and neither does nature.”, explains a specialist. These eternal pollutants are found in drinking water. Mayors of France have published an op-ed calling for PFAS-free water.

“Extremely persistent”

For health authorities and environmentalists, this family of molecules would be harmful to health. “They are extremely persistent (…) some are suspected of being carcinogenic”, indicates François Veillerette, spokesperson for the Générations futures association.
