Clothing sold on some websites could soon be more expensive. MEPs are examining the idea of a tax on products from fast fashion, deemed too polluting.
Dresses, shirts and t-shirts for less than ten euros. Items from ultra fast fashion brands are sold at ridiculous prices which encourage overconsumption. A proposed law provides for a penalty of 50% of the sales price on these products, with a limit of 10 euros. For example, an 8 euro top would be sold for 12 euros. The objective of this measure is to discourage consumers. “It’s really good to put a tax if it can encourage people”notes a young man.
A very polluting sector
The penalty would apply to platforms which offer thousands of new references every days and who do not have stores in France. This bill was welcomed by the clothing sector, which wantedeqthat French brands are protected. A highly polluting sector, the textile industry represents 10% of greenhouse gas emissions.
