why PSG will wear a star on their shirt next season

A tenth title of champion of France, it is not nothing. Even when you are the Qatari PSG, for whom the coronation in Ligue 1 must be a minimum each season. Crowned with a tenth national crown after their draw (1-1) against Lens, Saturday April 23, the Parisians join AS Saint-Etienne at the very top of the French rankings, just ahead of OM and their 9 titles. And for the occasion, PSG should add a star to its jersey, as tradition dictates. Finally, depending on the location.

From one country to another, the rules or customs vary in this matter. In England, almost no club wears a star on its shirt, apart from Nottingham Forrest for its two Champions League. Neither in Spain. This is, however, the case in Italy and Germany, where specific rules govern this practice.

For Italian clubs, one star corresponds to ten championship titles since Juventus initiated this practice in 1958. This is why the Old Lady and her 36 Scudetti have three stars. In Germany, the rules are a little more specific: one star for three titles, two stars for five titles, three stars for ten titles, and then a new star for every tenth. If you have followed correctly, Bayern, from the top of its 31 Bundesliga, therefore has a crest horned with five stars.

And in France then? No specific regulation specifies the attitude to adopt for French clubs. In 1993, AS Saint-Etienne was the first French club to wear a star in honor of its ten national titles, even though the last one dated from 1981. Apart from the Greens, only OM also displays a crest star. But in the case of the Marseillais, nine times champions of France, it is in tribute to the victory in the Champions League of 1993.

At first reluctant to celebrate its tenth coronation in this way, PSG has changed its mind in recent weeks. But the Parisian club has opted for an original solution: display the star not above the crest but on the right sleeve, above the LFP crest that the clubs wear in the league. A compromise that leaves the door open to a future star above the coat of arms, for a possible coronation in the Champions League?
