Culture: why has the science fiction book “Dune” become cult? – (France 2)

The book “Dune” by Frank Herbert has become cult because of the themes it addresses, such as ecology. The work that revolutionized science fiction is adapted for the cinema by Denis Villeneuve. The second part hits theaters Wednesday February 28.

Dune is an impressive film that thrills fans. It is above all a book which revolutionized the world of science fiction in the 1960s and which will often prove premonitory. More than 10,000 years after our era, Dune is a desert planet that has been destroyed by humans. In this hostile territory, water is an ultra-precious resource. In 1965, the American writer Frank Herbert imagined Dunea saga in six volumes, and is concerned with the preservation of the planet.

A nightmare for directors

“It’s a novel that continues to speak to us now”says Lloyd Chéri, deputy editor-in-chief of Screaming metalbook specialist Dune. It is also the first book to promote women, at a time when the American housewife is confined to her kitchen. By the late 1960s, the novel’s visionary ideas were a hit on student campuses. A cult book, but so rich, Dune has long been a nightmare for film directors. Only Denis Villeneuve manages to adapt it by signing his second film, particularly faithful to the legendary saga.
