The blue of the tricolor has become darker. Why this choice of Emmanuel Macron ?
Two years ago, the blue of the tricolor was a cobalt blue. It is henceforth Navy blue. Emmanuel Macron made the decision to change the flag’s shade of blue on July 13, 2020. Historically, navy blue had been used until 1976. Valéry Giscard d’Estaing wanted to clarify it to match the blue of the French flag with that of the European flag.
The president has the right to modify a national emblem. “That is one of a number of privileges. In France, the Presidency of the Republic is a kind of monarchy republican“, explains historian Jean Garrigues. For the flag, the Elysee specifies that Emmanuel Macron wanted to return to the origins of our national emblem. Today, flag makers only use navy blue.
