Tuesday May 28, the Senate adopted a text aimed at supervising the gender transitions of minors. A bill from the Les Républicains group which plans to severely restrict treatments and medical procedures accessible to young transgender people.
The bill supported by Jacqueline Eustache-Brinio, senator LR, was adopted by 180 votes to 136. aims to ban hormonal treatments for those under 18 and strict control of prescriptions for “puberty blockers”.
During the year 2020, a little less than 300 minors declared a long-term condition for transidentity, according to a report from the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs from March 2022. This is rather the increase in the number of consultations of minors in question of gender which worries Senator Jacqueline Eustache-Brinio, the latter wishing “be able to give time to minors who have questions”.
According to the president of the Grandir trans associationMaryse Rizza, “banning puberty blockers, when some children express transgender identity from the age of 3, is to sentence adolescents to death”. The High Authority for Health recalls that transgender people are more exposed to the risk of suicidal ideas and behavior. In this sense, Maryse Rizza encourages the multiplication of specialized consultation centers, because dating times can exceed a year for a first consultation.
