In France, more than 6,000 new cases of cancer per year are linked to the papillomavirus. The government believes that vaccination coverage is too low.
Teenagers are affected by vaccination. “HPV, the papillomavirus, is an infection that will affect both girls and boys. So it’s important to get vaccinated to protect yourself and your partner”explains Damien Mascret, doctor and journalist, present on the set of 12/13, Tuesday, February 28.
9% of boys and 37% of girls vaccinated
The aim is to vaccinate young people before they start having sex, because while most people get rid of the virus quickly, 10% of those infected will then develop cancer. Each year, 2,900 cervical cancers are caused by HPV. Other cancers of the anogenital region and the throat are linked to the papillomavirus. Vaccination concerns all children from 11 to 14 years old, with possible boosters up to 19 or 26 years old. Participation is still low: “today only 9% of boys, 37% of girls get vaccinated”concludes Damien Mascret.
