Security at the heart of the government’s return? Yes, because it is first and foremost a promise from candidate Macron. During the presidential campaign, he announced the creation of police and gendarme posts. The Prime Minister has therefore confirmed 8,500 over the entire five-year term, including 3,000 which will be created next year, in 2023.
>> Cybersecurity, Olympic Games, fight against domestic violence…: 8,500 additional police and gendarmes, but what for?
And above all, security is a real political problem for the executive. All opinion polls show that the French still do not trust the government in the fight against insecurity. Five years of it! Five years that this file appears as the Achilles heel of macronism. And so far, nothing has helped, neither the 10,000 new police positions proudly claimed by the executive under the previous five-year term, nor the activism of Gérald Darmanin…
The Minister of the Interior is however omnipresent. And that’s the least we can say. This summer, we saw it everywhere. From the front of the fires to that of the urban rodeos. Not to mention the hunt for Imam Hassan Iquioussen, accused of extremism and anti-Semitism, on the run since the Council of State validated his expulsion. In fact, twenty years later, Gérald Darmanin is still willingly inspired by the one who remains his mentor, one of his predecessors on Place Beauvau, Nicolas Sarkozy, the one who was nicknamed “Speedy Sarko” as he was agitated at all across the country on the frontline of the fight against insecurity. Activism served as a guarantee of credibility. The problem is that this all-out communication strategy is a little worn. And then this frenzy which is supposed to reassure public opinion encourages Gérald Darmanin to always add to it
Some accuse him of doing too much, even at the heart of the majority. This is a reproach that we hear frequently within the left wing of the marchers. Well, those are going to have a painful autumn. Because after the orientation and programming law on security, Gérald Darmanin will open a major debate on immigration which will conclude at the end of the year with the presentation of a new text which will aim in particular to facilitate deportation procedures in the event of rejection of asylum applications. Faced with a powerful extreme right in the Assembly, and an opinion on edge on insecurity, Gérald Darmanin has managed to make himself indispensable to the second five-year term of Emmanuel Macron.
