The day after the vote on the rejection motion, there is the question of the future: that of Gérald Darmanin, and that of the Assembly that some would like to see dissolved.

The snub is all the harsher because it was not anticipated. The deputies voted on Monday December 11 to reject Gérald Darmanin’s immigration bill, even before the debates had started. “A failure” recognized the Minister of the Interior, who immediately presented his resignation to the President, which was immediately refused. Emmanuel Macron asked him to find with the Prime Minister a way to lift the blockage to achieve an effective law.
Emmanuel Macron therefore refuses to throw in the towel because he wants a text on immigration. He wants to be the one who takes responsibility, so there is no question of showing himself shaken when precisely he is convinced of being the target of a “destabilization enterprise”.
How the head of state heard the news
One scene sums it all up: during the vote on Monday, he is on the plane bringing him back from a trip to Toulouse where he has just spoken about France in 20 years, on the occasion of the France 2030 summit, a plan for investments dedicated to the innovation he wants “accelerate“. The Head of State is then discussing, when he is informed of the setback. He notes, then resumes the thread of his conversation, according to what a witness says.
And if that did not prevent Emmanuel Macron from seeing the Minister of the Interior on his return, from subsequently calling Gérald Darmanin and Elisabeth Borne several times. At the Elysée, we insist: it is not a “crisis“. Gérald Darmanin remains, and there is no reshuffle planned for the moment. In the ranks of the majority, the idea of a dissolution is making a comeback. “One episode after another”delays a loved one.
On the side of the Elysée, we plead to start by pounding the incoherence of the coalition which supported the rejection motion proposed by the environmentalists, voted for by the Nupes, the RN and part of the Republicans. Groups united only by “the desire to bring down the government“, the majority say.
“Unmasking the oppositions, their short-termism, their contempt for the general interest, we cannot ignore this.”

“We are not going to take the text around the Luxembourg Palace three times”
So, what will become of the text? Gérald Darmanin announced it, the government will not give it up. So there are two options. Either the version of the text adopted in the Senate returns to the Senate, before returning to the Assembly, but “it’s baroque”judges a collaborator of Gérald Darmanin.“We are not going to make the text go around the Luxembourg Palace three times!”, he judges. Either, we summon the negotiators of the joint committee, seven deputies and seven senators, responsible for finding a compromise.
At the end of the process, given the composition of the CMP, which leans to the right, a harsh text will emerge. It will then be necessary to go back through the Assembly box, to have this text definitively adopted. And there, it will be the left wing of the majority in the Assembly that will have to be made to bend. “There is a risk of explosion, but it can be attempted”, a Macronist thinks out loud. The advantage of this solution is that it goes quickly. A meeting next week is being discussed. Needless to say, Emmanuel Macron’s speech in the Council of Ministers on Tuesday December 12 is eagerly awaited.
