Beef consumption has decreased by almost 20% in 20 years, according to FranceAgrimer. Inflation, ecology… How to explain this decline?

The French are losing their appetite for meat. In 20 years, consumption per capita has decreased by 5.8%. This decline particularly concerns beef, with a drop of 19% over the last 20 years. In fact, some consumers explain that they eat less, sometimes to save money. These changes in eating habits are worrying the agricultural sector, like Véronie Laby, breeder of around sixty Limousin cows, who produces meat for restaurants and direct sales customers. According to her, the profession could suffer if the French continue to reduce their consumption.

Quality is now sought after by meat consumers. “It is better to eat less meat, but eat good meat”, summarizes Benjamin Fremont, owner of a Parisian restaurant. 9 tonnes of beef ribs are sold each year in his establishment, from 90 euros per kilo. Among meats, only the consumption of chicken and duck increased last year.
