Like the United States or Slovakia, deepfakes spread during election periods. Presumably, fraudulent recordings produced by artificial intelligence could thus threaten the next European elections.
Thousands of American voters received a surprising message in mid-January. “It’s important to save your vote for the November election. Voting this Tuesday only allows Republicans to move forward in their quest to elect Donald Trump.”, President Joe Biden can be heard saying. He would invite voters in New Hampshire, United States, not to vote in the Democratic primary on January 23. However, the president never recorded or sent this voice message.
This is a deepfake audio, a recording generated by artificial intelligence. Fakes are multiplying today and can easily be created from a voice sample. For example, by taking a few minutes of a speech by Emmanuel Macron, it only takes a few clicks to generate a fake recording, as AI specialist Ari Kouts shows.
A risk for the European elections
Is the result credible? The recording of the French president reciting words from Eric Zemmour was listened to by passers-by. “It surprises me a little”, says a duped man. Only another man manages to discover the truth. These deepfake audios circulate during elections, as in Slovakia during the legislative elections in September.
An alleged conversation between a centrist candidate and a journalist was broadcast, in which he claims to want to rig the elections. The candidate was not elected after a very close vote. It is difficult to determine the impact of this doctored file, which has gone viral on social networks. But this example highlights a risk of manipulation during the next European elections.
