Urban rodeos: why are the authorities struggling to stem the phenomenon?
(France 2)

Urban rodeos are still booming. Despite tougher sanctions, the authorities are struggling to stem the tide. Explanations.

Launched at 70 km/h, motorcyclists zigzag on a Marseille fast lane, in full acrobatic demonstration. Skidding and wheelies on the roads, but also in the middle of buildings. Although illegal, urban rodeos continue to endanger local residents.

For two years, the police have been increasing the number of checks: 86,000 operations in 2023. But when they spot offenders in action, the police rarely engage in a chase. “This could lead to an accident and injuries.”says Michael De Poortere, spokesman for the Alliance Police Nationale union (Paris). To deter, the penalties have been strengthened: up to five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros in the event of a repeat offence, as well as confiscations. 2,200 devices were seized in 2024.
