The day of March 8 once again highlights the inequalities between women and men. Faced with taxes too, they remain. Update with journalist Chloé Tixier, present on the set of 19/20.
Faced with taxes, women and men are unequal. The withholding tax often disadvantages women. “With the withholding tax, the FISC applies the same tax rate to both members of the couple by default. It is a system that aims for equality, but which disadvantages those who have the lowest salary”explains the journalist Chloé Tixier, present on the 19/20 set, Wednesday March 8. However, low salaries are statistically more those of women.
Changes in 2025
In a couple where the man has a net taxable salary of 3,800 euros per month and his wife 1,800 euros, the joint tax rate is 6.9%. If it applied individually, it would be 9% for men and 2.6% for women. In 2025, the individualized rate will apply automatically. Beyond taxes, women tend to become poorer during married life. “It was the journalist Lucile Quillet who looked into this question. According to her, women will more often pay for daily expenses, (…) while men will invest more (…). Expenses that allow you to build capital”, explains the journalist. If the couple separates, the woman finds herself with little heritage.
