Could the incidents that occurred on Saturday May 28 during the Champions League final at the Stade de France have been avoided? The Home Secretary blames England fans when others denounce a lack of stewards.

With the approach of the Olympic Games in 2024 and the Rugby Cup in 2023, the fiasco of the Champions League final raises questions about France’s ability to organize large-scale sporting events. Home Secretary Gérald Darmanin held England fans responsible, accusing them of massive fraud and coming with nearly 40,000 counterfeit tickets. Counterfeit paper tickets are said to have been the source of the fraud.

The French authorities stressed that no incident had occurred with the Spanish supporters, while the English massed near the gates. Nearly 30,000 supporters would have tried to enter through an entrance normally intended for 4,000 supporters. The police unions point to a lack of stewards. “It’s a lack of organization at UEFA, it’s a lack of organization at the Stade de France, and the Stade de France has been overwhelmed by events“, asserts Fabien Vanhemelryck, of the Alliance police union.
