Who is Jonny, the singer’s gay uncle who inspired her for her new album?

Although it leaked on social networks, Friday July 29, the seventh opus of Beyoncé, entitled Renaissance has finally been revealed. The title Break My Soul was a hit when it was released announcing the color of this opus: very dancefloor, very house, very dance, basically very club. But this record would not have seen the light of day without Queen B’s uncle, Jonny. The latter died as a result of his fight against HIV in the 1990s.

“He was my godmother. The first person to introduce me to much of the music and culture that inspired this album”, she wrote on her official website, along with a vintage photo of him. In the title Heated, she mentions it. He had the “designer” cap and took care of Beyoncé’s outfits at the start of her career. But it wasn’t necessarily the best. “Tonton Johnny made my dress, that cheap spandex. Looks like a disaster.”

During the 30th edition of GLAAD Media Awardswhich rewards works, media and personalities for their role in representing the LGBT community, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, guests of honor at the ceremony, received the avant-garde price. On this occasion, Blue Ivy’s mother paid tribute to “the most fabulous gay man (she had) ever met and who was involved in raising (her) sister and (her)”she said. “Witnessing his fight against AIDS was one of the most painful experiences I had to live (…) I hope that his fight served to clear a path for other young people, so that that they live freely. LGBTQIA rights are human rights.”

Although the interpreter of Lemonade and his sister Solange called him Uncle Jonny, he wasn’t really their uncle but he was Tina Knowles’ sister’s son. “My nephew Johnny was my best friend growing up”wrote on Instagram on March 29, 2019, the mother of Beyoncé. “We were inseparable, my mother always said that when Johnny farts, you have to be there to catch him”. So technically, Uncle Jonny was more like Cousin Jonny. What does it matter, if today he disappeared, he will have marked his famous niece for life.
