He has written unforgettable film scores, the lover which earned him his first César in 1993 at 37°2 in the morningPassing by The English Patient for which he won an Oscar in 1997. This genius is Gabriel Yared, a Franco-Lebanese composer that directors are fighting over. In total, more than a hundred films are punctuated by the pieces of the prolific musician.

For each feature film, the composer engages in long-term work to find the universe specific to the story. “Very often, I accompany during the shooting. In general, I give the models at the time of editing, I invest myself because I am co-author. The director takes two three years to edit his film, we can’t get to the end of this process to make the music”, explains Gabriel Yared.

A long-term accompaniment which allows to offer a new dimension to the work while sublimating it. Like a chameleon, it adapts to all genres, from animated film Azure and Asmarto the biography with Chocolateto the drama for The lives of others.

This master of soundtracks has never lost his taste for cinema, even after fifty years of career. Every movie is an adventure. “My role is not to accompany the images but the spirit. I spend time to say what neither the image, nor the dialogues, nor the actors can say, it’s an unspeakable thing”, confesses the composer.

Gabriel Yared is not about to stop: this year he signs the music for three films, the last piano by Jimmy Keyrouz, Broadway by Christos Massalas and his latest collaboration, take off by Pietro Marcello. A musical drama retracing the life of a solitary young woman in the North of France, passionate about music and singing, who meets a magician. The feature film aroused great emotion during its screening at the opening of the Directors’ Fortnight.
