Who are the most cynical? Voters who distrust politicians or politicians who mock voters with their inconsistencies? For months, we have faced a deluge of bad news, broken promises and negligence from the political class.
At the federal level, China is torpedoing our democracy, the Prime Minister is entangled in indecent cronyism with members of the Trudeau Foundation and he is unable to bring himself to set up a commission of inquiry. The new official languages law is still pending, essential services are hampered by a civil service strike, the railway companies are still not brought to heel, and in the passenger charter, the government forgot to include airports which are its sole responsibility.
In Quebec, the Prime Minister is breaking his most solemn promises by displaying real contempt for his opponents. 4-year-old kindergartens (François Legault had put his seat on the line), seniors’ homes, reform of the voting system, Hydro-Québec tariffs and the very “important and necessary” third link between Québec and Lévis are commitments broken lightly.
And in our two capitals, transparency, which is an important value in our democracies, is simply left in the closet.
Does the population have no other option than cynicism? This way of thinking and analyzing politics is imposed on it by its own leaders.
