After two years of procedures and controversies, the 2022 classification of Saint-Emilion wines was made public this Thursday, September 8. Called into question every ten years, this new hierarchy of wines from the prestigious Bordeaux vineyards makes it possible to affix the words “Grand Cru Classé” or “Premier Grand Cru Classé” to the label of the bottles.
A single château promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A
The national committee of the designations of origin relating to the wines of the INAO retained in this classification 85 properties: 14 “First Grands Crus Classés”two of which benefit from the distinction A, and 71 “Grands Crus Classés”.
At the top of the list, Château Figeac joins Château Pavie in the very exclusive club of “Premiers grands crus classés A”. In the previous version of the ranking in 2012, there were four in this queen category. But between January and June 2022, three of these emblematic names of the Bordeaux vineyard, the Châteaux Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Angélus, announced that they were withdrawing from the classification.
