White-tailed Deer Saga: Woman Arrested for Harassing Mayor Catherine Fournier

The saga of the white-tailed deer at Michel-Chartrand Park continues to generate ink: a woman visibly disagreeing with the decision of the City of Longueuil to proceed with the slaughter of the animals was arrested for criminal harassment at the respect of Mayor Catherine Fournier.

The facts with which the elderly woman in her fifties is accused allegedly occurred during the Longueuil municipal council meeting on March 19.

The woman, reportedly not even a resident of the city, was arrested the following evening.

According to the authorities, the suspect committed “acts of criminal harassment” against the mayor.

“These acts were directed against the mayor of Longueuil and concerned the management plan for the white-tailed deer population in Michel-Chartrand Park,” Longueuil police said in a press release.

Following her arrest, the woman was released on conditions and could potentially face criminal charges.

Police say this is the fourth case under investigation involving the mayor.

“SPAL takes this opportunity to remind everyone to exercise the greatest caution when expressing themselves towards others, whether by post, on social networks, in person, or even on the telephone,” indicated the police force.

After years of procrastination and legal appeals, the City of Longueuil has confirmed that it will proceed with the slaughter of white-tailed deer in the fall of 2024 at Michel-Chartrand Park.

The park is struggling with an increasing number of deer, which threatens the ecological balance of the place. Between 2017 and 2023, the white-tailed deer population at Michel-Chartrand Park almost quadrupled, from 32 to 117.

Around 100 animals should be slaughtered with crossbows in 2024.
