White Sox tie mediocre record with 119th loss

(San Diego) The Chicago White Sox tied the American League record for mediocrity on Saturday with their 119e loss of the season, 6-2, against the San Diego Padres.

The White Sox (36-119) matched the mark set by the Detroit Tigers (43-119) in 2003.

Another loss by Chicago in its last seven games would tie the modern-era record of 120 losses set by the 1962 expansion New York Mets.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders hold the all-time record with a 20-134 record.

The White Sox are 9-48 since the All-Star break.

Chris Flexen (2-15) is winless in his last 23 starts and the White Sox have lost a 20e sequel series abroad.

Xander Bogaerts, Elias Diaz and David Peralta all homered for the Padres (89-66), who maintained a two-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks as the top seed in the playoffs.

The magic number for the Padres is two to clinch a playoff spot for the second time in three years. They didn’t get any help from the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, who each won Saturday.
