White-collar workers in Longueuil on strike four more days this week

The white-collar workers of Longueuil are holding a new series of strike days this week, as they strike from Tuesday to Friday.

The 1,200 union members, members of a local section of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, affiliated with the FTQ, are demanding the renewal of their collective agreement, which expired on 1er January 2021.

These include technicians, office workers, professionals, school crossing guards and swimming pool employees.

Due to this strike, the City of Longueuil has warned that its citizen service center and administrative buildings are closed. Skating rinks and libraries are also closed, but indoor swimming pools remain open.

White-collar workers are demanding the same conditions as those granted to the city’s blue-collar workers, namely a 10% increase in the salary scale, as well as a four-day week. The union sees this as a question of “internal equity”.

The City, for its part, denies offering less to white-collar workers than to blue-collar workers.

White-collar workers, who voted 92% in favor of a pressure tactics mandate that could go as far as a strike last November, also walked off the job on March 13 and 14.

Teleworking and recognition of employees whose working conditions are very precarious are also part of the discussions, according to the union.
