In Mexico, the families of the missing continue to fight to find the bodies of their loved ones in a country plagued by drugs, violence and corruption.
Hand in hand, many women who have mounted a collectyew are busy finding their missing relatives in the region of Sonora (Mexico). Not far from the Texas border, they search the earth in the hope of finding human remains there to begin their mourning. “Todayi, I ask God to help us. Something must be found in underground graves, in special places. We want to get a piece of bone, anything to identify someone“, explains Maria Isla Valdes, the mother of a missing person.
Further south of Mexico, at Bartolina, police are crisscrossing an area where bodies have already been found. If the families cannot arrange to search this area, they hope that their presence will prompt the authorities to continue the search. In the country, 30,000 assassinations were recorded in 2020, bringing the number of murders to a hundred per day on averagee. In total, 94,000 people are still missing, victims of the war of drug traffickers or corruption. Relentlessly, relatives of the disappeared regularly demonstrate in Mexico City, the country’s capital, to urge governments – whether left or right – to act.
