During a meeting held on March 9, the head of the Renaissance list, Valérie Hayer, compared Marine Le Pen with Edouard Daladier, French president who signed the Munich agreements in 1938.
In the middle of the European campaign, the head of the Renaissance list, Valérie Hayer said during a meeting on March 9: “Yesterday, Daladier and Chamberlain, today Le Pen and Orban. The same words, the same arguments, the same debates. We are in Munich in 1938.” Valérie Hayer therefore compares Marine Le Pen to Edouard Daladier, the French president of the council in 1938. The phase made people cringe. To understand the controversy, we have to go back more than 85 years.
The Munich Agreement
Edouard Daladier was then a figure of the popular radical left, far from the extreme right of Marine Le Pen. Neville Chamberlain was the British Prime Minister. In 1938, Hitler, in power in Germany, became more and more threatening. He wants to annex the Sudetenland, a Czech territory. In exchange, he promises peace. Chamberlain and Daladier will accept. They then signed the Munich Accords on September 29 and 30, 1938. According to historian Isabelle Davion, the comparison does not hold with what is currently happening with Russia.
