In 15 years, the number of letters sent to France has been divided by three. The activity of the factors was therefore diversified.

For three years, Lisa Orazio has been a mail carrier. That day, she went to the suburbs of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). In his bag, the number of letters continues to decrease. “But we have a lot of registered mail, packages”, she nuances. In 15 years, the number of letters sent has been divided by three, going from 18 billion in 2008 to 6 billion in 2023. Lisa, however, wants to remain optimistic: “We will always need postmen.”

La Poste diversifies its operations

To cope with the situation, La Poste is diversifying its activities: in 2017, it launched the operation “Watch over my parents”. After her tour, Lisa goes to René’s house twice a week. Today in France, 16,000 elderly people use this paid service, billed at 21.90 euros per month for four visits. “Yes, he’s a customer. (…) But it’s true that we shouldn’t take it personally, but it could be my grandfather, so knowing that he’s all alone… It makes us feel good to go see him”, she confides. La Poste must compensate for 600 million euros in losses due to the drop in mail. Some postmen also deliver packed lunches, others are tellers at the town’s post office.
