A Pokémon card found a buyer for nearly 4.5 million euros in 2022. But success often means scams and counterfeits. Many collectors were thus trapped. Reporting.

In the hands of children, they are simple trading cards, which only cost a few euros. The craze for Pokémon, imaginary creatures from Japan, has become global. The cards sell for 6 euros for ten, particularly at tobacconists. Some stores sell imitations, at 4.90 euros per package. “It’s more profitable than the real ones“, believes the seller. Counterfeits can also be found on the Internet. Enough to inspire dishonest resellers, who then deceive collectors.

Online scams

Passionate for 20 years, a man has paid the price. With his twins, he has more than 10,000 cards, a fortune of several tens of thousands of euros. Four months ago, he bought two extremely rare cards on a resale site: 250 euros. Once received and examined, they turned out to be false. “I tried to contact the seller again, but he disconnected his account“, he says. To ensure that a card is real, you have to turn to expert authenticators, specialists in cards. According to them, it is above all the back of the card that is authentic.
