There are many bridges during the month of May 2024. Schools may be sparse, which is not without risk.

Making your children miss school to bridge the gap and enjoy a long weekend. In this Parisian garden, these parents are divided. “People do what they want but from the moment the teacher is at school I think we have to respect the teacher. It’s also good to send the children to school”confides a father. “For our children, they are still young, so it’s a good choice to enjoy a little”, indicates a mother. While the idea may appeal, it is not without risk. For two days unjustified absences within a month, parents may be summoned and receive a warning from the establishment.

Up to two years in prison and a €30,000 fine

According to the education code, they also risk a fine of up to €135. However, in reality, during bridge periods, these sanctions are rarely applied. “It’s true that it’s not the same thing if it happens two days during the year or regularly throughout the year with repeated occasional absences”, specifies an expert. If unjustified absences continue and compromise a child’s education, the penalties can be up to two years in prison and a fine of €30,000.
