Prime Minister Legault brandishes the weapon of a referendum on immigration; he is undoubtedly bluffing, knowing that the use of a referendum is very dangerous, especially for an unpopular government. The population can then take the opportunity to sanction him. The PQ, with its leader, is ready to embrace the idea of a referendum to obtain full powers over immigration; play a sectoral referendum to prepare for the Big Referendum! But Paul St-Pierre Plamondon knows very well that according to the Constitution (article 95), immigration is a mixed jurisdiction, with federal preponderance in the event of conflict with a provincial law. As for Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, he follows the train and demands full powers, without really believing in it.
On the federal side, Justin Trudeau has no use for provincial jurisdictions and he generously encroaches on them (housing, health, etc.). Anything goes when his political future is at stake!
This whole spectacle is heartbreaking, and no compass exists to guide our politicians who do not act like statesmen. They are sailing in the wrong direction, according to the latest polls. Should we then simply conclude that we have the politicians we deserve? Pitiful!
