Jean-Luc Godard is dead, we learned this Tuesday morning. He was 91 years old. In the 1970s, the Franco-Swiss director had lived in Grenoble. An important period in his career since it was the time when he tried his hand at video – his films had until then been shot on film. Jean-Luc Godard therefore settled in Isère at the end of 1976 on the advice of Jean-Pierre Beauviala. This engineer from Grenoble had developed a video camera called “la paluche”, a very compact and light device that Godard wanted to experiment with. In Grenoble, the director created the “Sonimage” studio.
“Number Two”, experimental film
He will even shoot a film in Grenoble. Its title: “Number Two”. This is an 88-minute film shot like a documentary, where Jean-Luc Godard shows himself on screen and talks about his cinema.
In this experimental work where the screen is split into two parts, he follows the life of a family through several generations. The film, shot in an apartment in the Villeneuve district, was released in 1975. The following year, Jean-Luc Godard left Grenoble. He then moved to Switzerland.
