franceinfo: What does the song represent Di Doo Dahtaken from the album of the same name for you?

Jane Birkin: I was happy because there were tracks with my monkey, which we later used on the cover of the album Melody Nelson’s Story. It was my fetish. Again, it was a lovely little song with my dad singing”Di Doo Di Doo Dah“. It was so well seen. He had made another song about my monkey too. Those songs were bouquets of charm.

“‘Di Doo Dah’ was a little portrait, a lovely song with all the people who were dear to me.”

Serge Gainsbourg played with you a lot, he presented you as an ingenuous companion, very liberated, even a little nymphomaniac. You got into his game…

Yes. He had written a ‘hairy’ song called Hang up, it’s horrible. It’s so delicious, there’s nothing very indecent and it’s a hit.
