What you always wanted to know about… | Phil Roy

Comedian, host, actor and young father, Phil Roy answered readers’ questions with humor and frankness. The Press.

Are there any topics you would never joke about? And what role would you have liked to play in film or on television?
– Sylvie Charbonneau

The angle you choose to approach a subject is the most important thing, more than the subject itself. You can’t laugh at anything in any way. When the subject really lives in the artist, you can make films, songs, poems, visual art works out of it, just as you can make comedy numbers out of it. I did a number on perinatal mourning, a delicate and difficult subject that I experienced, but the way I talked about it, in a heartfelt and embodied way, made it a number that really touched people, so it all depends on how you approach the subject.

I dream of acting in a movie! There are so many roles I would like to play! I am a movie buff, and I also like TV series. I would have liked to act in the movie 1995in the series The invinciblesIn This is how I love youbecause I like this offbeat universe, far from my reality. I also like films based on real events, it fascinates me, I even do research on the facts, it obsesses me! I recently saw The Long Gamethe true story, in the 1960s, of four young Mexicans who work in a Texas golf club and who manage to participate in the Championship. I liked Monica the machine gunI loved the movie too The plunger, I went to the bar Le Terminal, because the author Stéphane Larue who wrote the book worked there. I had auditioned for the film and it was a good thing I didn’t get it, because it was for the role of Bébert and the actor Charles-Aubey Houde was really excellent!

How does your creative process work? Are you a workaholic?
– Benoit Michel Séguin

No, I’m not a workaholic! I like the variety of pleasures. I like to do a lot of things at the same time, that’s what keeps me alert and alive in everything I do, because I like to go from one project to another. I write numbers and then I find the common thread that will unite two or three numbers together, and that will be the driving force behind the writing of the show. I record each show. I really record each show, whether it’s in a small or a large room, in a bar, or an evening where I present a single number, everything will be recorded. The next morning, I listen again with my text in my hands and I rewrite everything! That’s how I work.

Are you very shy?
– Pierre Bibeau

It depends on what. In life, I am a little more reserved. In high school, I was not the funny guy, I was not the clown at the back of the class… and you could not guess that one day I would be a comedian! I dreamed of being the one who made jokes, who was funny and loud, but that was not me! I am someone today who will dare to knock on doors, even if I am told no, it does not matter. I am not shy about it, I am capable of bringing ideas and developing projects, but I am more shy in my personal relationships.

How has fatherhood changed your professional life? What did you discover about yourself by becoming a father?
– Karine Charron

Adaptation is at the heart of my personal and professional life, like any parent. My schedule no longer revolves only around my desires, but around my two daughters who are 8 months and two and a half years old, and my girlfriend. I want everything to go well, my family is my priority, and I come last! When I was 20, I didn’t ask myself the question, whereas today, before accepting a project, I talk to my girlfriend about it, because she is the one who will make sacrifices on her side while she already makes a lot, so I ask her the question: is it too much? I have lots of desires, but I also want to be there for my two daughters. I found my childish side again when I became a father. I organize games! At Easter, I was so eager to be in the egg hunt! I was crazy!

Are you improving your golf skills?
– Jean-Sebastien Houle

Yes, I am improving! Every year, I challenge myself to try three new things. It could be learning to play golf, traveling alone, saving money, building something with my hands. I made a coat rack that has become a symbol, because I tell myself that in life, we always have things to learn, even if we are not very good, it is only the beginning, because we can always improve. That’s what I do in golf, I swung in the butter, I lost six balls per hole and now it’s three in an entire game! I have fun, I become better! And honestly, when something happens in my life as a father, comedian or host, I remember only one thing: I didn’t know how to play hockey, and today, I know how to skate backwards! I overcame that ordeal, so I am capable of anything!

If the men in black from the series Plan B rang your doorbell, what would that change?
– Sylvie Charbonneau

I would like to relive my high school years! I loved it so much! I had so much fun! I had become like a young adult and I was enjoying this new treatment. I would like to relive it without giving importance to bad things, without worrying about who I would like to ask to the prom. Just be with my friends, be able to chat and spend the evening walking from park to park, and skateboarding! Life was beautiful, we didn’t worry about anything!
