The Senate adopted the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution on Wednesday February 28. France is thus the first country to do so, almost 50 years after Simone Veil’s law. In reality, what will the changes be?

The vote in the Senate for abortion in the Constitution, Wednesday February 28, was celebrated by many feminists. According to certain activists, abortion could be threatened in France. “When we see today the strength that extreme right, reactionary and conservative groups have in pushing for these rights to regress, we must never lose sight of the fact that nothing is ever definitively acquired,” confides a woman. At 8:02 p.m. on Wednesday, the Senate approved the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution by a very large majority.

The first country in the world to guarantee abortion in the Constitution

From now on, it will be impossible to modify the Veil law on abortion, enshrined as a fundamental freedom. The Congress will meet on Monday March 4 in Versailles (Yvelines), to adopt the constitutional revision. France will then become the first country in the world to guarantee abortion in the Constitution.
