Tens of thousands of Donald Trump supporters gathered on Monday, July 15, in Milwaukee, the capital of Wisconsin, in the Midwest. Two days after escaping an assassination attempt in the middle of a rally, the candidate about to be invested by the Republican Party against the outgoing president, Joe Biden, is establishing himself as the star of the convention organized by the “Grand Old Party”, until July 18. An institutional high mass, this unmissable meeting of American political life, should allow the presidential campaign across the Atlantic to enter a new phase. Here is what you need to know about these four important days in the race for the White House.

An unprecedented deployment of security forces

With more than 50,000 attendees expected, the Republican convention is under tight security. In Milwaukee, entire areas of the city center are fenced off with large metal fences and patrolled by U.S. Secret Service agents. This elite police force responsible for protecting high-ranking officials has assured that it is “totally ready” to guarantee the safety of visitors, personalities, volunteers and even residents of the city hosting this high-tension convention.

However, after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday, the Secret Service has come under heavy criticism. “I have confidence in the security plan that our coordinator and our partners have put in place and that we have reviewed and strengthened” after Saturday’s attack, its director Kimberly Cheatle said in a statement on Monday.

As for Donald Trump himself, “In addition to a reinforcement in June of the personnel responsible for his security (…), we have also made new changes since Saturday to ensure his continued protection during the convention and the rest of the campaign”added the head of the Secret Service.

To ensure the safety of the Republican congressmen, many of whom are making the trip, the United States Capitol Police have also deployed to Milwaukee, reports Craig Caplan, a producer for the CSPAN network of channels, which broadcasts the parliamentary proceedings in Washington, on X. “For security reasons, we cannot give details on the scale of the device,” said a source within this service.

Those taking turns at the podium have been instructed not to change their speeches, NBC reported. Republican Jewish Coalition director Matt Brooks, who is scheduled to speak, told the network that the party wants to avoid seeing “100 people talking about the same thing”namely the assassination attempt against Donald Trump. The major themes of this unmissable event should therefore be, as expected, purchasing power, immigration, crime and security.

The end of the suspense for the vice-presidency

The first major event of the Republican convention in Milwaukee could come as early as Monday: the announcement of Donald Trump’s choice for vice president of the United States, if he wins on November 5. Three frontrunners are emerging: best-selling author turned congressman JD Vance, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and influential Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Observers do not rule out the announcement of a completely different personality. The billionaire limited himself to saying that he would choose “a great vice president”. The chosen person is due to give a speech on Wednesday evening.

In 2016, Donald Trump had chosen as his running mate Mike Pence. This vsAn evangelical Christian and staunch opponent of abortion, he was then expected to help Donald Trump win over the religious right. The former governor of Indiana had once again shared the Republican ticket for the 2020 election, won by Democrat Joe Biden. After years of unwavering loyalty, Mike Pence withdrew his support for Donald Trump following the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The inevitable coronation of Donald Trump

The highlight of this Republican convention lies in the least uncertain event of this political sequence: the official designation of Donald Trump as the Republican Party’s candidate. It is expected on Thursday, during a spectacular evening punctuated by the release of 100,000 red, white and blue balloons.

The former president faces no rival. The personalities once tipped to run for the nomination (asFormer South Carolina Governor and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis) were quickly forced to bow to the popularity of the man in the red cap.

LThe slogan of the convention, “make America great again,” is a nod to the slogan that led Donald Trump to victory in 2016. In the Baird Center, the huge, ultra-modern sports complex chosen to host the convention, the walls have been covered with large photographs glorifying the 45th president of the United States, while a bust in his honor stands in the entrance hall.

Among the speakers at this Republican convention, which looked like a coronation, were: several members of the billionaire’s family will also be speaking. Two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, and their respective partners, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Lara Trump, will also be speaking.
