Elected for a second term on April 24, Emmanuel Macron will be officially invested as the new President of the Republic this Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Elysée Palace. Franceinfo explains what this highly codified ceremony consists of, made up of civil and military traditions.
No transfer of power, a first since 2002
During most of the investiture ceremonies of the President of the Republic, a transfer of power takes place between the President in place and the new President. Usually, the future president is welcomed by his predecessor in the Cour d’honneur of the Elysée.
In the Fifth Republic, this was the case eight times. The first transfer took place between Charles De Gaulle and René Coty in 1959. The last time was in 2017 with the transfer of power between François Hollande and Emmanuel Macron.
This Saturday, that will not be the case. Emmanuel Macron will go up the Elysée staircase alone. The ceremony will then follow the same pattern as during the re-election of Jacques Chirac in 2002 or François Mitterrand in 1988.
On the other hand, and for the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic, two former presidents will attend the ceremony on Saturday: Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande.
No return from the Champs-Elysées scheduled for this Saturday for Emmanuel Macron, unlike 2017. The morning should be more sober and shorter than five years ago.
Proclamation of the result of the election by the Constitutional Council
Emmanuel Macron will then enter the hall of the Palais de l’Elysée. The official results of the presidential election will then be announced by the President of the Constitutional Council, Laurent Fabius.
The elected president is recognized as Grand Master of the National Order of the Legion of Honor and then receives the collar of the Grand Master of the Legion of Honor. This Saturday, Emmanuel Macron will be given this necklace for the second time.
This necklace is made up of sixteen links and dates from the Fourth Republic. On the back of each link are the names of successive presidents, starting with Vincent Auriol. There will remain, after Emmanuel Macron, two free links on the current necklace.
Speech and review of the troops by Emmanuel Macron
Emmanuel Macron will then deliver his inaugural speech. He will then greet the invited personalities who will be officially “introduced” to him by the chief of protocol of the ceremony. For the end of the ceremony, he will head to the Elysée Park where a Marseillaise will be sung. Emmanuel Macron will finally review the troops before 21 cannon shots are fired from the Esplanade des Invalides.
