Election of the new president, distribution of the National Assembly office, constitution of the different groups… The calendar of future deputies looks set to be busy for the summer. This institutional agenda was communicated on June 17 by the lower house.
The deputies will open the 17th legislature of the Fifth Republic with the election of the new president, on July 18, or 11 days after the second round of early legislative electionsThe outgoing incumbent, Yaël Braun-Pivet (Renaissance), gave up her title at the same time as her mandate as deputy during the dissolution. Shortly after 3 p.m., the deputies will begin their traditional procession, going one by one to the tribune of the National Assembly to insert their secret ballot into a box dedicated to this election. The vote can last up to three rounds if no one obtains an absolute majority.
Once this first hurdle has been overcome, the various political groups will then have to be formed in the process. The following day, July 19, the presidents of these groups are called to meet to distribute the positions in the Bureau of the National Assembly, its highest executive body, as well as the places in the various committees of the lower house.
A first conference of presidents is to meet on July 20, in particular to discuss the parliamentary calendar, disrupted both by the dissolution and the holding of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
According to the Constitution, when the Assembly elected after a dissolution meets “outside the period provided for the ordinary session, a session is opened by right for a period of fifteen days”. As a result, parliamentarians will sit at the Palais-Bourbon at least until Friday, August 2, LCP specifies.
