Operation “Honest Promise 2”. It was a little after 6:30 p.m. French time on Tuesday, October 1, when sirens sounded throughout Israel on Tuesday for the second time in six months. Iran launched a salvo of missiles against the Jewish state, called “Honest Promise 2”, taking part of the international community by surprise.
The Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideological army, claimed to have “aimed at the heart” of Israel, to avenge the death of the leader of pro-Iranian Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Palestinian Hamas Ismaïl Haniyeh and one of their commanders, Abbas Nilforoushan, killed at the same time as Nasrallah in Lebanon.
Iran’s chief of staff said the missiles had been aimed at “the three main military air bases of the Zionist regime, the Israeli secret services” and two air bases, one of which “used to assassinate martyr Nasrallah“. Iran “only targeted military bases“, assured General Bagheri on national television. Iran has exercised its “right to self-defense“, and acted afterwards”immense restraint for almost two months, in order to make way for a ceasefire in Gaza“, wrote on X his head of diplomacy, Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
On April 13, in response to a deadly strike attributed to Israel on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Iran had already fired some 350 explosive drones and missiles towards Israel, the first direct attack of its kind, dubbed “Honest Promise”. Most of the missiles were then intercepted by Israel with the help of allies, especially the United States. This October 1, according to Tehran, “90% of missiles reached their target“. The attack left two people lightly injured in Israel, according to emergency services, and a Palestinian was killed by missile fragments in Jericho, in the occupied West Bank, according to a Palestinian official. Most of the missiles were intercepted by the system defense “Iron Dome”.
Israel quickly threatened to retaliate. “Iran made a serious mistake tonight and will pay the price”declared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, specifying: “We will stick to what we have set: whoever attacks us, we attack”.
In the evening, the Iranian Foreign Minister called his French, German and British counterparts and affirmed that Tehran’s operations were “finished“, before warning Israel against any response. He also asserted that if Israel ever decides to retaliate, Iran’s response will be even harsher next time. Iranian Chief of Staff General Mohammad Bagheri, promised that Iran will strike “with greater intensity“and will aim”all infrastructure” of the country if Israel carries out its threat of reprisals. “If the Zionist regime, which has gone mad, is not controlled by its American and European supporters and wants to continue these crimes or act against our sovereignty and territorial integrity, the operation like that of this evening (Tuesday) will be repeated with greater intensity and all regime infrastructures will be targeted” General Bagheri told Iranian state television.
The Iranian authorities, finally, also warned any other country from intervening in this conflict, in particular the United States, which expressed its solidarity with the Jewish state. During the night, Iranians took to the streets to express their joy in Tehran, but also in provincial towns. But everyone now fears an Israeli response and a generalization of the war throughout the region.
