What to watch on TV or VOD the weekend of July 27-28, 2024?

To see on Tou.tv: Injuries

Justine Pearce is a promising young tennis player who dreams of becoming the best in the world. After several impressive victories, however, she suffers a serious injury and sees her aspirations shattered as she is forced to abruptly end her career.

The fiction created by Hania Elkington (The Innocents) immerses the audience in the heart of the rehabilitation and reconversion journey of a fallen athlete. But not only that. Injuries also reveals the behind-the-scenes of professional tennis, including the complex relationships between players, coaches and families. Justine must constantly combine the expectations of her loved ones, rivalries on the court and the often toxic power dynamics of the sporting world.

The series also attracts attention thanks to the performances of its actors, in particular that of the protagonist played by Ella Lily Hyland (Five and a Half Love Stories in an Apartment in Vilnius, Lithuania). The psychological and emotional challenges that she faces indeed add a dimension to Injuries. Her relationship with Glenn Lapthorn, her coach, played by Aidan Turner (The Hobbit), finally has something to keep viewers on the edge of their seats…

Watch on PBS and Tou.tv: Gods of Tennis

Tennis again, with a fascinating documentary series this time. Gods of Tennis explores the careers of iconic and legendary players who have transcended the sport over time. Figures such as Björn Borg, John McEnroe, Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King are at the center of compelling stories that highlight not only their on-court exploits, but also their off-court influence that has contributed to the cultural and social evolution of tennis through egalitarian and anti-racist struggles.

Through intimate, exclusive interviews and archival footage that bring to life some of the highlights of tennis history—the 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, dubbed the Battle of the Sexes, and the 1980 Wimbledon final between Borg and McEnroe, among others—the series gives us a glimpse of the key moments that shaped these champions and elevated them to the status of myths.

Gods of Tennis is all the more interesting because it shines through its ability to balance the homage to these glories of the past and the sporting and societal analysis, which the most nostalgic will appreciate. Gods of Tennis is, in fact, a testament to the legacy left by these tennis giants.

Watch on Apple TV+: Women in Blue

Heading to Mexico in the 1970s with Women in Blue. It follows the true and all the more thrilling story of four women who join the city’s first female police unit. In a world dominated by men and undermined by corruption, they fight in particular to prove their worth and to make justice reign. Their determination to overcome obstacles and break down prejudices thus offers a plot rich in suspense and emotion.

Let us highlight the strength of the cast of the series created by Fernando Rovzar (Monarca) since the main actresses embody these heroines with brilliance and symbiosis. Bárbara Mori (Lost in the night) impresses for example with her strength and courage; Amorita Rasgado (The Traspatio) plays a whole different range of emotions; Natalia Téllez (Logout_) and Ximena Sariñana (Love you duel) add complexity and dynamism to this daring team.

Women in Blue catches our attention for its depiction of the challenges faced by women in 1970s Mexico. The series thus offers a reflection on gender equality and the fight against corruption in a breathless atmosphere, not without irony.

From July 31

Watch on Netflix: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

The British series adapted from the best-selling novels by Holly Jackson introduces us to Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a bright and determined high school student.
