August 30 is the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, declared by the United Nations. The UN explains that “a disappearance has a doubly paralyzing effect: for the victims who are often tortured and whose lives are constantly threatened, and for the family members who, unaware of the fate of their loved ones, go from hope to despair.” To mark the occasion, a parade in memory of those disappeared under the Pinochet dictatorship will be held in Santiago, Chile.
