What to watch for on August 26, 2024?

Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia was summoned today by the Prosecutor’s Office to be heard as part of a criminal investigation. “Citizen Edmundo González Urrutia” is summoned “on August 26 at 10 a.m. for a hearing” in connection with the investigation into the website where the opposition published its presidential results, according to the summons published on social media.

On July 28, President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner, with 52% of the vote, by the National Electoral Council (CNE), which did not, however, make public the minutes of all the polling stations, as required by law, claiming to be the victim of computer hacking. According to the opposition, which then made public the minutes obtained by its scrutineers, Edmundo González Urrutia won the election with 67% of the vote. The Supreme Court of Venezuela validated Mr. Maduro’s re-election for a second six-year term on Thursday, without showing the minutes provided by the government, which it claims to have verified.
